Ok, I am going from Denver to Glacier and am trying to get best route through Idaho. ';Best'; means not the quickest, but a balance between time and scenery.]
Basically, need help from Rock Springs, WY up to Missoula, MT
Thinking about several routes or combinations:
1) 191 up toward jackson in wyoming then cut over on 26 to Idaho Falls and take I-15 up to I-90 west to Missoula
2) I-80 west from rock springs, cut up on hyw 30 through kemmerer then up through soda springs and take I-15 north again to I-90 west to Missoula
3) Instead of taking I-15 up under the above routes, cut over via either 26 or 20 west to arco and take 93 up to missoula.
4) (this would be long, but wondering if worth it?) Take 26 or 20 west to arco and then dip down on past craters and come up on 75 through sawtooths to 93 up to missoula.
Any comparison of time/scenery tradeoff would be great as well as how long each various route would take?
Thanks.
Tanya
P.S not planning on stopping at yellowstone or tetons in WY, so can take that out of the equation in the route planning.
Help with route through Idaho
Hi Tanya
The Id forum is too empty.
Give you some more info on us 93 from Salmon. Great route. Log Hotels in Three Forks. Before the Mt border exit to Big Hole Battlefield, short visit. Great visitor center. Battle between Us army and Nez Perce. They called a high elevated valley a Big Hole. Ubundant wildlife. Ground squirrels running around. Bitterooth Valley. Real espresso near the supermarket (real great coffee here). Scenic byway from Hamilton. Nice little church with vistor center founded by Peter Desmet (from Belgium). Less scenic towards Missoula. North of Missoula on us 93 (my diary said: Ugly road, sorry). No alternative. Stayed at the great KwaTag Nuk resort in Polson almost on the lake. Visited the Miracles of America Museum just north of Polson on 93. Play the piano!! Cherries along the east shore. Again a nice espresso in Bigfork. To Kalispell, bit boring but we didnot stay long so sorry about that and to Whitefish. Nice little town and then to Big Mountain where we stayed a couple of days.
Hope this helps a bit.
PS, if you can visit the Miracles of America Museum. YOu won%26#39;t be sorry. Oss place.
Cheers

Type: oss=odd of course
I f you come over thru Jackson, Id. Falls, and then to Ketchum., it is really worth it. The drive from Jackson to Ketchum, thru Craters of the Moon, is 4 hours, we do it all the time.
I will bump up my post on the drive through Stanley. The drive from Stanley to Salmon, is absoultly beautiful and worth it. There is a wonderful BandB outside of Salmon, worth the stop. 40 acre woods, or something. i will look it up right now. We stayed there and it is on a pond, with paddle boats. The food is fabulous. enjoy
Don%26#39;t miss Java on fourth street, for the best ';Bowl of Soul';. that is their signature coffee drink. NEver will you find a better one.
Also, the Casino is one of the oldest buildings left in Ketchum. The only place where smoking is allowed and the drinks are cheap and strong..an institution...when i got here in the late 70%26#39;s, the old guys were still gambling . This was a gambling mecca and the Casion was the place to be. You have to take a peek inside and if you need a haircut, there is a barber outside, beware! Ha
enjoy
there is a great circle trip that you can take. leaving boise, you go north on highway 95, to Banks. Drive the payette river, watch the early kayakers, and drive the road through Loman, stop at the kirkham hot springs on the way. the road takes you to stanley, usually the coldest spot in the nation!!! all dirt roads, the greatest bakery and lunch spot (i cook for a living and love this place) the stanley bakery...just ask. Get a sandwich to go and head south to Redfish Lake in highway 75. Sit on the porch of the lodge, look out to the wonderful lake, the Sawtooth Mountains in the background. If you want a more secluced lake, save the sandwich (that will be hard!!) and go to the next lake on the drive to Sun valley, Petit Lake. Stop there for the seclulded lake effect. Then you will go up the hill to the Galena lookout...what a view of the Sawtooths. When you go down the hill, look for the small stream that will form on the right hand side, going down. Later when you are in Ketchum, that is the Big Wood River, huge by then. Galena Lodge is a great spot to stop, at the bottom of Galena Summit. It has great history and inside, if it is open, the pictures of the old lodge are on the walls. In the summer we bike up here and in the winter it is used for x country skiing. Head on down to Ketchum, visit my wonderful town, and go south 18 miles to what we call the ';blinking light';. Then turn right on highway 20 and return to Boise. This should take all day, but worth getting up early to do. enjoy
you would start from the blinking light, out from Picabo and go north and do this backwards..
the website for 100 acre woods restort ( funny, it is just a log house, but worth the stopover) is
www.100acrewoods.com
enjoy
Charley, it sounded so intriguing that I had to take a look myself! Looks like we%26#39;ll be taking a trip there this summer. :)

Tanya, good advice above, I can%26#39;t add any more.
Pug
pug, it was really fun there. if you drink, take your own liquor...we had a party outside with someone from Ktown, who brought really good tequilla. they don%26#39;t care, then we went to the paddle boats and chashed the ducks on the pond...silly girl i am...enjoy
