Hi there. I am traveling to Mountain Home, idaho in feb. It is my first trip to idaho but only my second out west. Last year I went to Utah for sundance...anyway, my boyfriend and I are going to visit family and I wanted to get my barrings. How far is Yellowstone? And is what would be the halfway point between mountain home and deer valley, utah? i will have family in deer valley at the same time as i will be in utah and we were toying with the idea of meeting up. Any specific restaurants to visit? Any info would be a great help. thanks and looking forward to hear from anyone!!!
POints of Interest
Hi Mountain Home is a small town around a big airforce base
not much to do but Boise is less than an hour drive
but in feb driving can be treacherous. one day it can be 50 and beautiful next day blizzard with all roads closed
you are in the middle of some great ski areas sun valley is just 3 or 4 hr aways. plus many local ski resorts.
maybe for a meeting with family check out jackpot nevada or elko nevada if you like gambling both have big hotels .
get a map and look not much between Boise and Salt lake.
In summer time so much to do here but in winter mostly skiing and snowmobling and hot springs.

Mountain Home is small and NOTHING around, no decent restaurants, except Boise, which about 45 in away. Sun Valley is 2 1/2 hour drive and you can go down to the Gooding exit on the freeway if it is snowing. Turn left (get a map) and then in Shohone, where the road ends, turn right, you end up in SV. So, it is about 7 hours to SLC and Deer Valley is very close, about 45 min. It can be a scarey drive, depending on the weather. The road that i told you about, is the way we all go in the winter, not bad at all. enjoy
Trip, what brings you to Mountain Home in the dead of winter??
I grew up there and there isn%26#39;t anything more to do now than there was then!
Halfway point between Mountain Home and Deer Valley is probably Pocatello... and there%26#39;s nothing much there, either.
Good luck on hooking up with your relatives.
Pug, oh so true...
Somewhat interesting sights around Mountain Home include Bruneau Dunes to the south. It you%26#39;re driving past Twin Falls on the way to Utah, take a little side trip to see the Hwy 93 bridge over the Snake River. There%26#39;s a parking lot so you can stop to take in the beautiful view. Also east of the town of Twin Falls is Shoshone Falls, although I don%26#39;t know if it has any water flow this time of year.
I think that the closest ski resort to Mountain Home is Soldier Mountain off of Hwy 30. I have not skied there. You could also continue to Sun Valley, which is more trendy and expensive.
Hi all thanks for getting back to me. Well it is a trip to see some family, but I know - going in - that it was a small town. how about resturants to try? Is there Ice Fishing? I think we are going to go skiing for a day but i will leave the decisiona s to where to the locals.
Tripcrazy, it%26#39;s so close to drive to Boise, you ought to go there, lots of food choices. I haven%26#39;t heard of any really good places in Mountain Home.
Yellowstone is 6-7 hours away and is closed to traffic at this time of year. I%26#39;d leave that for a summer trip or, if in winter, a special trip just to Yellowstone.
There is skiing outside of Boise at Bogus Basin. I think the closest skiing to Mountain Home is at Soldier Mountain near Fairfield. (Owned by Bruce Willis, but don%26#39;t look for the Great One there!) From what I%26#39;ve heard, Soldier is more ';old school,'; not as developed. I don%26#39;t ski so I can%26#39;t tell you for certain.
Good luck on your trip, give us a report!
Pug
