How is the drive?

I%26#39;m driving from SLC to Idaho Falls within the next couple of weeks in the late afternoon. What kind of road conditions are there going there and back? Does it really only take 3 hours? Is there a good stopping point along the way?

How is the drive?

Babaloo, it%26#39;s true, it only takes about three hours, depending on the traffic around Salt Lake. Late afternoon on a weekday will be slower than on a weekend. You could stop in Tremonton or Malad, if you want a halfway point stop. It%26#39;s freeway all the way. You could hit a snowstorm, but it probably won%26#39;t stick to the road.

If you want to take the scenic route, take Highway 91 to Logan and continue north to Preston, of Napoleon Dynamite fame. You%26#39;ll rejoin the freeway before Pocatello.

Have a good trip!

How is the drive?

Malad is exactly half way from SLC to I.F.. There%26#39;s a gas station/convenience store there that we always stop at to stretch our legs.

As usual, no one can predict or control the weather. I%26#39;ve made this drive in January and had clear, dry freeway the entire distance. I%26#39;ve done it in April and gotten socked with a blizzard that had people sliding off the road in all directions. Generally, the Malad pass is the worst spot (as it%26#39;s the highest point). If it%26#39;s crappy weather, just slow down and take it easy and you shouldn%26#39;t have any problems.

It takes us three hours to get to the airport from our house in good weather. It%26#39;s 210 miles.

We drive this frequently. The biggest slow up at the moment is the area around Ogden where they are doing construction on I-15. Even with that it is only three hours and we live a half hour south of the SL airport.

We like to break it up. Sometimes we stop in Malad, sometimes just north of the Malad pass at the Downey exit, sometimes in Pocatello. Once at the lava rest stop. That really is a little too close to IF though.
