We currently live in Hawaii. Our extended families still live on the mainland ( pacific northwest). We are considering all the options available to us for moving back to the mainland. We like the small town feel and like Ketchum. Can anyone tell us how you like living in Ketchum?
living in wood river valley
love it, moved from laguna beach 30 years ago, don%26#39;t know where i would go , if not the wood river valley. enjoy
oh, guess that i should say that we have idaho rocky mountain ticks here...that was an old saying to keep people away...ha

Thanks for the feedback. Read your review of Ketchum dinning and we completely agree with you. we never miss a visit to ketchum grill when we visit.
where do you live in hawaii???i have been over 30 times, as my friends live on all the islands, i got married on kauai...
We live on Maui. We have seen so much change here in the last 17 years. Not so much aloha. We just had this conversation today about what would be the disadvantage of living in Ketchum. We wonder if people are accepting of new residents. When we moved to Maui we had a few friends but had no idea how many people were running from the mainland to escape one thing or another. We also realize that people have a small group of friends and really are not so open to welcoming others in to their lives. It has been an experience that neither one of us regret.
My husband hates rain but then we both miss camping, weekend get-aways, and the grocery stores that the mainland have to offer.
When you visit Hawaii, where all to you vacation?
My favorite island (of the Hawaiian Islands) is Kauai. Just can%26#39;t beat the physical beauty of that place, and it has great hiking, swimming, etc. Na Pali is amazing.
I live in Boise, and am personally not really a fan of ketchum/sv. Have you considered McCall or New Meadows area? Prettier and less touristy (though getting worse every day). Heck, you may want to give Sandpoint up in North Idaho a look. There are also a number of great options in Oregon and Washington as well, depending on what exactly you%26#39;re looking for.
yeah, pnwbeers, so you won%26#39;t be moving here...hurray, sorry, i just wouldn%26#39;t say that i didn%26#39;t like where someone lived and mykena is asking about it.
mykena, do you happen to know mitch kysar or bruce tapley,,,good friends. when we come over we go to the big island as that is where my really good friend lives. although, we like to sneak away to kauai, have had friends on maui and oahu, thru the years. we now travel to fiji, turkey, thailand ect. we don%26#39;t have much money, but live to travel!!
the town is filled with ';new additions'; and most like to meld into living here. Some come to town and want to ';rename'; all the streets...that is going on now...so what does the restaurant east ave bistro say when the street is named spruce???those are the kinds of people that really stand out.
we love to back pack and hike. i am a health nut and love the idea of stepping out the door and go for a run.
YES, we are touristy, but we do have lots of down time we call slack, that is wonderful. even in the busy season, you can walk into the forest on your snowshoes and you are the only person there. heaven
so, pnwbeers, this isn%26#39;t your cup of tea!ha
i can%26#39;t get into all the reasons i love it here, or more people would move.
enjoy
No need to be defensive - I think it%26#39;s great that you like where you live, I%26#39;m just giving my opinion and suggesting a couple of alternative options since they asked for advice on moving back to the northwest. If they%26#39;re considering some of the ';tourist towns'; in Idaho, I think McCall and Sandpoint are absolutely options they should consider.
Aloha,
Sorry Charley, don%26#39;t know your friends. But I have really appreciated the feedback. We love to xc ski, downhill. We have not tried snowshoe, but would like to. My husband is an avid rider (bicycle). I am a runner, so we could really enjoy the outdoors. We love to camp and really miss that about living here. We also noticed that there is a lake about 45 min away from Ketchum that we could paddle our one-man canoes during the summer.
We were both born and raised in Oregon. But My husband hates rain/wet-cold.
In response to pnwbeers. I have not been to the other areas you suggested but please understand we feel pretty isolated living on this rock. We are also used to tourist and we do not want to be an hour from sking. Boise is a cool city and we have friends who have lived there and loved it. They just decided to take off on a sailboat for a couple of years!
we hope to visit soon the Mountain cams show off some great snow!
McCall is right between two ski areas (Brundage and Tamarack), and Sandpoint is right beside Schweitzer Mountain, which is a great ski area that%26#39;s undergone a lot of upgrades recently. Both are reasonably short drives to decent sized airports (in Boise and Spokane).
Just something to check out. Another thing to consider is that both are on beautiful lakes - McCall is on Payette Lake and Sandpoint is on Lake Pend Oreille. Both are absolutely beautiful lakes.
Hey Charley,
Have you been to Tahiti? We have been twice and also the Marquesas. We are frugal travelers and have found awesome ways to enjoy even an expensive trip.
Love Europe and italy but since we live so close to Tahiti we have tried to take advantage of the south pacific. We also traveled to the cooks, had a moped and bicycle for our transportation. really fun!
