My husband and I are flying into Las Vegas in mid-July to meet up with a few friends and then the two of us have thought about driving up to the Idaho area for the rest of the trip. Being from flat Ohio, we love the West and its scenery. My questions:
1.How far of a drive from Boise to Glacier NP?
2.Where is there good fly fishing around Boise?
3.Nice resorts?
We will probably fly home from Boise, but don%26#39;t necessarily have to be based there. My husband wants to try fly fishing and I am game for a different anniversary--even though I am campaigning for a return trip to Hawaii from Vegas! Thanks.
Please help with suggestions!
I will let the southern Idaho folk talk more about the Boise area but the trip from Boise to Glacier NP is about 550 to 650 miles depending on which route you take( a very long one day drive). An alternative to driving up to Glacier NP for mountain scenery would be to go to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area east of Boise which in my Idaho opinion may have just as much great mountain scenery as Glacier NP. There are resorts / hotels / lodges throughout that area either in the Stanley area or Sun Valley area.
Please help with suggestions!
here is one of my posts for the easy and wonderful drive , loop , from boise, through the Sawtooths, Wood River Valley, and back to Boise. We have many fly fishing spots in our area , as well, i have heard that Silver Creek is comparable to the fly fishing in New Zealand...that is hard to beat.
there is a great circle trip that you can take. leaving boise, you go north on highway 95, to Banks. Drive the payette river, watch the early kayakers, and drive the road through Loman, stop at the kirkham hot springs on the way. the road takes you to stanley, usually the coldest spot in the nation!!! all dirt roads, the greatest bakery and lunch spot (i cook for a living and love this place) the stanley bakery...just ask. Get a sandwich to go and head south to Redfish Lake in highway 75. Sit on the porch of the lodge, look out to the wonderful lake, the Sawtooth Mountains in the background. If you want a more secluced lake, save the sandwich (that will be hard!!) and go to the next lake on the drive to Sun valley, Petit Lake. Stop there for the seclulded lake effect. Then you will go up the hill to the Galena lookout...what a view of the Sawtooths. When you go down the hill, look for the small stream that will form on the right hand side, going down. Later when you are in Ketchum, that is the Big Wood River, huge by then. Galena Lodge is a great spot to stop, at the bottom of Galena Summit. It has great history and inside, if it is open, the pictures of the old lodge are on the walls. In the summer we bike up here and in the winter it is used for x country skiing. Head on down to Ketchum, visit my wonderful town, and go south 18 miles to what we call the ';blinking light';. Then turn right on highway 20 and return to Boise. This should take all day, but worth getting up early to do. enjoy
any other questions? i will try and look up some infor for Silver Creek, to make the husband drool.

If you are looking for scenery and ';resort'; atmosphere and amenities, I strongly recommend Sun Valley/Ketchum, ID (I live in Boise). Fantastic place to visit, especially in the summer, where there are tons of fun things to do. Some of our favorites: white water rafting, horseback riding, and window-shopping. Redfish Lake, as mentioned by a previous poster, is magnificent. It is reminiscent of the German Alps! Some websites to woo you:

If you decide to visit this area, I would be happy to share some of our favorite places with you.
I am sure you have checked an know that the drive from Las Vegas to Boise is 750 miles. You might consider flying especially if you plan to drive on the Glacier NP. If you like desert scenery (I do) you will enjoy the drive to LV to Idaho. If you don%26#39;t, I%26#39;d fly.
Also, FYI when I go to Yahoo maps and check Boise to GNP, I get another 750 miles. Definitely, it is more varied scenery than LV to Idaho. I would not attempt is in one day, however.
