I am going out to sun valley for a weekend and a few days in mid march and wanted to get some advice.
First of all, where to rent. On the mountain? Ski Shop? Demos?
Second, what is there to do (obviously other than ski) in the immediate area. I wil be skiing all day but there is one person who might take a day or two off and asked me about area activities.
What about restaurants/night life? What kind of things are there to do for a group of four 23-25 year olds? I mean, we arent looking to ';party hard'; but some nice apres ski places, some fun night time things to do are always good to know about.
Last thing: We are staying at KETCHUM HORIZON FOUR. in the SOCKEYE SQUARE building....does anybody know where that is? How close to the mountain, how close to restaurants etc?
thanks!
Trip in March
i just returned from sun valley and we had so much fun! we are in our late 20%26#39;s. there is a hot spring about 25 minutes away. it%26#39;s called the frenchman%26#39;s hot spring. just keep following warm springs road and you%26#39;ll see the sign. it%26#39;s worth the trip. we went once after skiing and one morning and both times we were the only people there. there is also ice skating at the sun valley resort. there are lots of shopping and dining options in town.
on thursday night at the boiler room (at the sun valley resort) there is a singing comedy group called The Vaurnette%26#39;s (sp?). they were so funny, we had a great time there! the show starts at 6pm. they also have stand up comics on fri and saturday night at the same place. they do have some live music at the river run lodge at the mountain. the music was okay but all the days that we were there the crowd was lame.
there were good bands at whiskey jacques (in ketchum) but they didn%26#39;t get going until around 10 pm. on sunday night they have $1 well drinks and domestics after 9pm. we heard that ';casino'; was fun, but we didn%26#39;t make it there. (bar/nightclub in ketchum)
we also caught a sun valley suns ice hockey game and that was a lot of fun. it%26#39;s also in sun valley. www.sunvalleysuns.com
hope this helps, you will have a great time!
Trip in March
oh yeah restaurants...
we ate at a hawaiian restaurant in ketchum called ';no ho%26#39;s hawaiian'; it was really good and cheap, paid about $30. tip included for two traditional hawaiian plates with sodas. we also ate at a cool sushi place called ';sushi on second'; slightly pricy, 4 rolls and one glass of wine for $60 tip incl.
First of all, i love the idea of renting new skis, demos...they are new, and freshly tuned...Sturtevants on Main Street...208 726 4501...ask for the ski department and ask for Kurt. Tell him the mustard lady refered him. I had him fit my ';hard to fit'; feet for my boots, love them.
There are many other things to do. We have great shopping and eateries. Also, you can rent snow shoes, get a picnic lunch and just go anywhere and walk...then have a picnic..if this sounds good to the person taking the day off, i will give you instructions where to go. Actually, just 8 miles from the warm springs lift area, there is also a river run area, (two ways to start up the mountain, you are really near the river run area) is the Frenchmans Hot Springs . You drive 8 miles past the ws lifts, and when you go by the last few houses, you make a sharp left turn. The sign and parking is right there. You have to wear clothing, (oh, the old days were fun there ),and the springs are right in the river..you can go about 1/4 mile to where they don%26#39;t plow the road anymore and park. Take the snow shoes and walk out the path. So, pretty, come back and take a dip in the springs..they are one of a kind.
Also, if anyone is interested in x-country skiing, you can rent a pair at Sturdevents as well, and they have maps where to go. You can go 20 miles north to Galena Lodge, old log structure, was the ice house for the area , and they have trails, and snow shoe too, ANd the best food. Very healthy faires and great beer, decks and really a fun thing to do.
Resturants, i would make resos before you go, Ketchum Grill 7264660, East Avenue Bistro 7269251
a really fun place to go is Ric Shaws, they don%26#39;t take reso, you go, put your name and cell # on the board and they call you. Great asian food, all small portions, so you can try lots.
Night life,,,main street '; the street of dreams'; , that is where it all happens in SV...
Horizon Four is near the mountain. A bus, free, picks you up right outside. The main street of town, is 4 blocks east...A great place.
enjoy.
Don%26#39;t miss Java on fourth street, for the best ';Bowl of Soul';. that is their signature coffee drink. NEver will you find a better one.
Also, the Casino is one of the oldest buildings left in Ketchum. The only place where smoking is allowed and the drinks are cheap and strong..an institution...when i got here in the late 70%26#39;s, the old guys were still gambling . This was a gambling mecca and the Casion was the place to be. You have to take a peek inside and if you need a haircut, there is a barber outside, beware! Ha
enjoy
