I am planning on spending my honeymoon in Yellowstone in mid-September this year.
We are flying into Salt Lake City and plan to spend a couple of nights in Utah, before driving on up to Yellowstone. Is there anywhere in Idaho you recommend we see and spend a night before heading into the Park?
We are staying at Old Faithful Inn and then Lake Yellowstone in the park.
Thanks in advance for you help!

A stop in Idaho on the way to Yellowstone from Utah
Hi primaballerina,
Have you been to this part of the U.S. before? Eastern Idaho isn%26#39;t particularly touristy, it%26#39;s more known for its seclusion and scenic beauty (think fly-fishing). For a honeymoon trip, I%26#39;d really recommend a stop in Jackson, Wyoming instead. Wooden sidewalks, saloons, shopping and restaruants - very western. Try the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar (right downtown) and the Mangy Moose (in Teton Village) for a drink. The Wort Hotel is very nice for a place to stay. Merry Piglets is one of our favorite dinner spots.
You%26#39;ll love Yellowstone National Park and the Old Faithful Inn. We go every year in late September/early October and have a great time. The geyser loop trail (around Old Faithful) and the Painted Mud Pots are always a classic. If you go up to Mammoth, you%26#39;re sure to see (and hear) elk dividing up the herds for winter (the males like to fight it out in the streets).
Congratulations and have a great trip!

I think that Jackson is a MUCH better choice for a stop. We go at least 6 times a year, we have dear friends there. For dinner, the Rendevouz Bistro is by far the, in my chefs experience...oh, i am a picky eater, best food in that valley. We also love Off Broadway, and our friend used to own the Calico. Eat in the bar for a casual dinner, and the salad with the fresh salmon is great. For fun, the Snake River Brewery is great, if you like beer. they have won many awards, and just tried their ';discombulator'; brew, which has a higher percentage of alcohol. In mid Sept, the rates at the Spring Creek Ranch is lower, and oh, so romantic. It sits up on a hill overlooking the valley. www.springcreekranch.com/
check out the website.
have fun
Thanks for all your advice!
I really wanted to visit Ketchum, but it%26#39;s just a bit too far out for us on the way to Yellowstone.
We definitely plan on visiting Jackson for a day trip, it sounds great.
We%26#39;re decided to stop off at Lava Hot Springs for one night before continuing onto the Park - it%26#39;s somewhere different! Someone on here recommended it, but I do know some don%26#39;t rate it. Although to be honest I%26#39;m so excited about our trip I could stay anywhere and like it!
read about lava, i thought all the reports were not so good??
Hi Charley,
They don%26#39;t seem so bad. Some dodgy accommodation by the sound of it though.
But once we%26#39;ve been I%26#39;ll be able to put my ';two-penneth'; in, as they say in Blighty! Watch this space!
Oh, Lava Hot Springs is pretty fun - verrrry small town, though (population maybe 500). There%26#39;s a huge outdoor pool with a 10 meter board, the hot springs themselves, and, during the summer, you can rent inner tubes and float down the river through town (takes about 20 minutes and there are buses to take you back to the top to do it again). It%26#39;s fun small-town entertainment. There are only a couple of bars, restaurants and hotels to choose from.
Enjoy!
Hi parentsof3,
I%26#39;m glad you%26#39;ve said that about Lava Hot Springs - that%26#39;s the kind of thing I really want to experience, a really small town that%26#39;s a bit quirky, as well the big cities and big landscapes.
Thanks!
Lava Hot Springs sounds fun. Parentof 3, where would you stay? We are always looking for fun things to do ourselves? Thanks
Hi Charley,
We%26#39;ve never actually stayed in a hotel there, we%26#39;ve just gone down and done the pool and inner tube stuff. We%26#39;ve eaten at the Blue Moon a couple of times and really enjoyed it (kind of divey, typical bar menu - but keep in mind, my favorite place in Hailey is the Wicked Spud). I know that there are a couple of B%26amp;B%26#39;s and lower end motels in town, and camping right outside town (a two minute walk, if that). The 4th of July festival is cute.
I%26#39;ve booked the Lions Gate Manor for one night in September.
Its got good reviews on here, and it looks fun.
The Phantom room is kind of spooky, even though some people like it, so I booked the Roman room!
I%26#39;ve never stayed in a B%26amp;B in the US before so should be fun.
