Ponderosa State Park (McCall, ID) to Victor, ID advice

Hi- our family is staying there for 3 nights in August, can%26#39;t wait to come. I chose this area because of the proximity to Hell%26#39;s Canyon, and whitewater rafting opportunities, and golf.

From there, we%26#39;re headed to Victor, ID (west side of Teton National Park). I%26#39;ll be pulling a pop up trailer....I was looking at a road, Rt. 24 that cuts over to a Rt. 21, and heads through the Sawtooth Range....will this be ok? Is it too rugged? I want to avoid the interstate (driving all the way from Cleveland to Glacier on them), but I want to be safe and smart. Thanks.

Although I haven%26#39;t been on 24, I have traveled most of Hwy 21 through the Sawtooths, and I think you should be okay for that. The road is a well-surfaced, wide two-way road and has absolutely beautiful scenery over the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway and the Salmon Scenic Byway. I would suggest that you continue on 21 until you get to Challis and then go south on 93 to Idaho Falls. On the way, take a short 7-mile detour 7 miles south of Stanley on another scenic byway to see Redfish Lake. Another great stop is Craters of the Moon near Arco, where the astronauts trained before going to the moon. Hopefully someone else will chime in to let you know about 24 through Lowman... Have a wonderful trip.

The ';24'; you reference is known more to the locals as Banks-Lowman Road OR Garden Valley Road, and while there%26#39;s a bit of a climb over the last 10 miles, it is almost as good as 21 from Lowman onward. You should have no trouble on that road. Frankly, I prefer it to 21 between Idaho City and Lowman.

I agree- Hwy 24 over to 21 will be no prob for pulling your pop-up. Done it myself w/ our pop up. I%26#39;ll actually be traveling both those roads this weekend (w/o camper).

Definitely pop down when in Stanley %26amp; drive up to Redfish Lake. It%26#39;s a mini-Tetons %26amp; very beautiful. Take a dip in the lake %26amp; grab a cold bevy at the Redfish Lodge for a break from the heat too.

I%26#39;ve never done the drive on 93 from Challis to Arco but would expect it to provide some good scenery since you%26#39;ll be driving right by Borah Peak, highest pt in Idaho. Plus you get to avoid the scene in Sun Valley where traffic is beginning to become a hassle, especially on weekends.

Plan for smoke- everything%26#39;s on fire right now.

Sounds like quite a road journey you%26#39;re planning! Have fun!

Thanks a bunch everyone. I have heard about the fires out that way on the news, planning on coming anyhow. Hopefully, everything will be fine, and the firemen will be safe.
