St. Anthony was a nightmare. Dreadful little town with rotten restaurants. Stayed at Henrys Fort Inn which was awful. Screaming and yelling all night, police came 4 times. Reservations were lost. People at the desk (with the exception of the owner) were surly and rude. Office opened an hour late so everyone had to wait to get something to eat.
St. Anthony
I%26#39;m surprised anyone would pick St. Anthony as the stopover... being raised in Idaho I always knew it as the place they sent teenage juvenile delinquents. And of course there are the sand dunes... but nothing else. I%26#39;m very sorry you had an unpleasant experience. Idaho has so much more to offer.
St. Anthony
That%26#39;s a shame you had such a lousy time. I%26#39;d have to agree with cdudley, though; St. Anthony is a very small town and nothing I would consider as a tourist hot spot. ';Dreadful'; and ';rotten'; seem a bit harsh, however. Main Street is actually quite pleasant with several interesting shops, and there are a couple of (small) restaurants which are nice for lunch (for small groups). If you were on some sort of tour, I would fault the guide operators and not St. Anthony in general - small towns are what they are, and they%26#39;re not always set up to accomodate larger groups.
Actually one of my favorite restaurants in all of the US is in St. Anthony and when we visit Idaho we happily drive fifty miles north to eat there. It is a tiny place that only provides counter service. It is called Chez%26#39;s. I recommend that you arrive a little before 5:00 so you get the first seating at the counter. Otherwise you will have to wait for a spot, and I promise you that there will be a wait.
All the locals eat here, and in addition to counter service they do an enormous amount of take-out. It is always a struggle to know what to order as everything is terrific. We like the butterflied shrimp, the halibut and the finger steaks are all delicious. The homemade salad dressing is so popular that you can now purchase it in local grocery stores.
Makes my hungry just thinking about it. Other than eating at Chez%26#39;s I have to agree with other posters. St. Anthony is absolutely not a place I would consider for an over-night stop. I%26#39;d go to Idaho Falls where you have a wide variety of hotel options and many restaurant choices.
I kind of wonder why you stopped there for the night. Did someone tell you it was a good over-night location?
St. Anthony is not a dreadful little town, and we have a number of nice restaurants -- Chiz%26#39;s, Relay Station, El Jaliciense, Jill%26#39;s Place, plus Subway and Big J%26#39;s. The Guest House Inn is our only motel, but the experience you described was a rarity. St. Anthony is a beautiful place with views of the Henry%26#39;s Fork and the Teton, 15 city parks, the Henry%26#39;s Fork Greenway with includes two nature trails along the river, and historic downtown and shops. I invite you to come back next year and visit our Fremont Emporium, a community%26#39;-owned store scheduled to open in later summer. The historic Silver Horseshoe should be open again in the spring. We%26#39;re a happening place. I%26#39;m sorry you had a bad experience and felt the need to denegrate my hometown because of it.
