drive from Salt Lake City to Boise

I have three days to spend between picking up a car in Salt Lake and arriving to visit family in Boise. Looking for suggestion for an interesting drive and good places to stop. How about Sun Valley for a couple of days? Rafting? What about Crater of the Moon Nat%26#39;l pk, Stanley and the Salmon River of No return wilderness area? We are an eastern couple looking forward to seeing the wilds of the northwest. (Will have finished a tour of Yellowstone and grand Teton) Traveling end of August

drive from Salt Lake City to Boise

1961, welcome to Idaho! My suggestion would be to take off north from Salt Lake, either on I-15 or Highway 89. The trip up 89 is more scenic, and if you%26#39;re a Napoleon Dynamite fan, you%26#39;ll go through Napoleon%26#39;s hometown of Preston. :) You%26#39;ll go through Pocatello, which might be a good stopping place if you%26#39;ve arrived in Salt Lake after noon. North of Pocatello you would turn west on Highway 20, which leads to Craters of the Moon. At the end of August, this is going to be HOT. As far as I know there is very little lodging in Arco, the closest town to Craters of the Moon. If you continue on Highway 20, you%26#39;ll come to Highway 75. A turn north will take you to the Sun Valley area. Wonderful place to spend a couple of days! From Ketchum, continue north on Highway 75 and you%26#39;ll see the Sawtooth Mountains. At Stanley, catch Highway 21 and follow it over Galena Summit and then south through Lowman, Idaho City, and finally to Boise.

Most of these roads are rather windy mountain two-lanes, so allow plenty of time.

I haven%26#39;t done the white water thing... hoping another poster will fill you in on that.

Have a great visit!

With the limited time you have, I would spend it all in Stanley , in the Sawtooth National recreational Area. Visit stanleycc.org it lists several activities and lodgings in the area. You still might be able to catch a whitewater rafting trip on the Salmon River. Very beautiful mountain lakes and scenery, heaven for a hiker. I would recommend the Mountain Village Resort for lodging. I would also take the most direct route to Stanley from Salt Lake City with the limited amount of time you have.

Hi 1961

Here%26#39;s what we did.

From SLC we took I 80 to Wendover and visited Bonneville Speedway. Nothing there but the salt flats are amazing and we were lucky to see some cars, quads and trikes speeding.

Into Nevada (also Wendover) and gambled of course. To Jackpot(!) and into Idaho and to Twin Falls. We visited Balanced Rock (I would not make the detour again). Saw the falls (not very impressive in september) but the views from Perrine Bridge are amazing and TF is a good location to spend the nght.

Next day from TF to Craters of the Moon (worth visiting, but indeed hot even in september) to Arco, Challis and Stanley. Beautiful area and worth to stop. Now you can go from her to Boise. We drove up north to Montana.

Have fun
